Executive Committee

President: Charlotte Lucy Latham (SF02) moved back to NYC in 2006, after enjoying some additional time in Santa Fe, NM where she was involved in the arts community. Now, she is co-director of an ophthalmic medical education company here in the city and starting a PhD program at CUNY Graduate Center in Comparative Literature. She hopes to become a teacher, in no small part inspired by the many wonderful tutors she had during her time at SJC on both campuses. Currently, her favorite book is Proust's In Search of Lost Time.

Treasurer: Kevin Farrelly (A01) was impressed at St. John's by the possibility of a life of shared inquiry. Plato and Xenophon hold a special place among his favorite authors—he has led chapter seminars on Platonic dialogues. His chief interest in the chapter is to help marshal our poor power to see that liberal education shall not perish from the New York metropolitan area. He has been Treasurer since 2007.

Secretary: Carol Trent (A81) always welcomes alumni comments about events, scheduling and notices. She has worked as an architect in New York City for the past ten years. She moved here from Coral Gables, Florida where she attended the University of Miami and worked an an architect. A list of her favorite readings would include novels by George Elliot, Thomas Hardy and Jane Austen, Norse Sagas, historical biographies, military history and anything 18th Century.

Webmaster: John Hetland (A64/65) has lived in Manhattan since 1965. His passion is Renaissance sacred music, and as founder and director of The Renaissance Street Singers he brings it to people who might not otherwise hear it. In 2006 he retired from commercial computer programming and now devotes his time to his music and maintaining several websites.

Our Mission

This site exists to foster community among SJC alums. Our focus is at the local level of regional alumni chapters and interested individuals.

Our publishing mission is to facilitate contact and promote event attendance by providing access to:

We encourage discussions about sharing resources within the community, including access to all content, features and shareware, and link-swapping. Our chapter sponsors and arranges various events in the Greater New York area: seminars, networking receptions, social gatherings, a summer picnic, and special events, including museum visits and trips to the theater. Information about what we provide is organized into the following pages:

Building a stronger community

The New York City Chapter of the St. John's College Alumni Association facilitates social, educational and professional contact among alumni living in the New York metropolitan area. We are chartered by the National Alumni Association.

Chapter membership is simple: as a member of the St. John's alumni community living in the New York area, you are a chapter member. Like the College, the chapter uses the term "alumni" in the broadest sense: once you matriculated you became a member of the College, and as a former student you are now part of the alumni community. Some of our most active members are non-graduates.

The chapter sponsors and arranges various events: seminars, networking receptions, social gatherings, a summer picnic, and special events, including museum visits and trips to the theater.

The most important function of the chapter is to provide resources for alumni to take advantage of the college community's most valuable resource: its people. The New York chapter is lucky to have a large (nearly 800) and diverse alumni base. From doctors, lawyers, investment bankers, architects and scientists to firefighters, train conductors, piano tuners and entrepreneurs (and of course many in the arts) we cast a wide net. We are even luckier that those seeking to help their fellow alums seem even more enthusiastic than those seeking the help! The Chapter works to continue to set up structures that will make alumni networking easier and more productive. These structures include networking receptions, a mentoring program and this website.

The more active the chapter, the better it is for its members, so we encourage you to participate, whether that means coming to a seminar or just keeping in touch with local Johnnies.

Please pay your dues, or donate your time.

NYC Chapter dues are voluntary and on a sliding scale:

Failure to pay dues does not affect one's status as a chapter member in good standing nor preclude participation in any chapter event. In fact, we all know that whether you've been out of school for one, six, or twenty years doesn't mean that you can give at the level requested. Some may be able to give more, while some of us are struggling to make ends meet. So give $5.00 if that's what is comfortable, or you can volunteer your time for an event if you have the time. Anything is appreciated and we will put your time and/or your money to good use!

Most events the Chapter conducts are either free or run at a nominal cost (like the donation request for seminars) that usually does not cover the full cost. Dues are used to make up the gap — to have an operating budget to try new events without fear of bankrupting the chapter. Dues also cover operating costs, such as the upkeep costs of the website.

All work by chapter officers, the web team, the mentoring team and in the course of any other chapter initiative is done for free on a volunteer basis.
